Famous Pirates

Charleston is full of pirate legend and lore.  During the golden age of Piracy of approximately 1680-1730 many famous pirates visited or had ties with the Charleston area.

Blackbeard (Ed Teach) pillaged the city for many nights, at one point, one of the cities prominent businessmen Mr. Wragg and his son were kidnapped by Blackbeard and his crew.  Blackbeard held Mr. Wragg and his son hostage for several days while his crew went into the city and tried to gather the required medicinal supplies needed to cure his crew.  Eventually his crew returned from the city with antibiotics and supplies to cure the crew.

One of Blackbeards former crew, Stede Bonnet, well he was not really a crew member, basically Blackbeard took over the Bonnet's ship and Bonnet agreed to be part of the crew, essentially Bonnet was kept below decks while Blackbeard Captained his ship.

Eventually Stede Bonnet was hanged at The Battery with his crew.

Anne Bonny and Mary Read were two of the famous female pirates that used to frequent the Charleston area along with Jack Rackham.
